Many customers were surprised when Logitech presented the G613 in late August 2017: the product is a wireless mechanical gaming keyboard. An unusual choice, because, until then, almost all other renowned manufacturers have been exclusively producing wired mechanical keyboards.
Wireless Mechanical Gaming Keyboard
For the keyboard’s wireless connection to the computer, Logitech is putting its faith in its proprietary lightspeed technology. The manufacturer promises a signal rate of 1 millisecond, facilitating a user experience comparable to handling a tethered solution. Alternatively, the keyboard can also be connected via Bluetooth, which allows the user to switch between different devices quickly and easily. The G613 runs on two AA batteries with a service life of approximately 18 months, according to Logitech. As soon as the battery level goes down to 15 per cent, the indicator light on the keyboard flashes up.
The Logitech G613 uses the Romer-G switches manufactured by Logitech itself. These linear switches actuate at a short distance and have an expected service life of 70 million clicks. Macros and customizable commands can be assigned to the six programmable keys on the left side of the keyboard. Separate multimedia controls and keys for controlling the wireless connection can be found on the top-right corner of the keyboard.
No Background Lighting
The recommended retail price for the Logitech G613 is 149.99 USD. For that amount, the majority of customers no doubt rightfully expect the keyboard they purchased to feature background lighting. However, the Logitech G613 offers no such thing. This should not be a problem for people using the keyboard mainly by daylight, but it is definitely a knock-out criterion for more than a few night owls. As background lighting is a huge factor in terms of battery consumption, the choice to cut the illumination is understandable though. There is a chance that the manufacturer will launch an illuminated version in the future. After all, the Logitech G613 is the first wireless mechanical gaming keyboard to be truly taken seriously.
